The thing that first impressed me about Spirit Works, run by the husband and wife team of Timo and Ashby Marshall out of Sebastopol, is that they make all of their own grain neutral spirit in-house. This inky beauty has a big, rich, ripe bouquet of blackcurrants, smoked herbs, chocolate and earth, as well as full-bodied richness, tons of richness and ripe, yet certainly present tannin on the finish. 2011 Altos de Terral "Cuvee Julia" Ribera del Duero (Previously $80)

Based in Roa, the seat of the Ribera del Duero consejo and one of the prime vineyard areas in the D.O., Altos de Terral is produced by the winemaker of Pago de Capellanes. It is a rich and lush expression, in keeping with the warm and dry vintage conditions of 2011, but with a richness, generosity and fruit purity that I have yet to see in other Ribera del Duero wines from this vintage. Highly recommended.
