2009 Branas Grand Poujeaux, Moulis Top Pick!
2009 Branas Grand Poujeaux, Moulis

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sleeper of the vintage from the backwater appellation of Moulis, the 2009 Branas Grand Poujeaux is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot. A big-time wine, opaque purple in color, with loads of cassis, smoke, incense and licorice as well as an earthiness reminiscent of a St.-Estephe, this wine is full-bodied and long, with sweet tannin and an overall classic constitution. It can be approached now but should age nicely for 15-20 years. (RP)" (12/2011) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Clearly ripe, with a juicy core of dark fig, cassis and blackberry flavo ...Read More »

1995 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien

91 points Wine Spectator: "Intense aromas of crushed blackberries, licorice and Spanish cedar. Full-bodied, concentrated and structured. Give it some time. (JL, Web Only-2007)" 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ruby-red with a pale rim. Initially closed nose opens slowly with aeration to offer delicate blackcurrant and mineral aromas complicated by a touch of field herbs. Then richer and deeper on the palate, with flinty blackcurrant, raspberry and herbal flavors carrying nicely through the aftertaste. The chewy, peppery tannins have smoothed out nicely with age. This wine has already developed much more depth and ...Read More »

2016 Chasse-Spleen, Moulis (Pre-Arrival)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chasse-Spleen has a very elegant bouquet with neatly integrated oak, the terroir really showing through here, hints of cedar and smoke emerging with time. The palate is fresh as a button on the entry. It is cut through with a superb line of acidity that engenders superb tension, the tannins firm but fine with a subtle marine influence towards the persistent finish. This is a fabulous Chasse-Spleen, the best I have ever tasted from the estate. It could end up at the top of by banded score. (NM)" (4/2017) 92-93 points James Suckling: "A solid and linear young wine with blackcurr ...Read More »

1985 Chasse-Spleen, Moulis

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Chasse-Spleen is fabulously deep in color, with a full-intensity, scented bouquet of spicy new oak, rich curranty fruit, and plums. In the mouth, the wine is very concentrated, long, big framed, but impeccably balanced, with quite a finish. (From Robert Parker's Buying Guide)" (1/1995) Wine Spectator: "Very ripe and generous with lots of plum, earth, chocolate and anise flavors that are packed in together with soft, mouth-drying tannins needing a few years to resolve themselves." (5/1988) K&L Notes: Robert Parker ranked this estate's 1985 vintage as one of the "past glories,"... Read More »

1990 Chasse-Spleen, Moulis

91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A superb Chasse-Spleen. A similar hue to the Lafon-Rochet but with a wider brick red rim. The palate is more floral and feminine with good complexity: cedar, forest floor, earth - all quite lifted and perfumed from the ripe Merlot. The palate is smooth, with well-knit tannins, good acidity, though with a touch of excess alcohol that lends the wine some bitterness. But after time in the glass, it harmonizes and becomes more cohesive. Cedar and tobacco on the finish. Very focused. This is a fine 1990. (NM)" (12/1999) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Superclean and racy. Medium-dark garnet c ...Read More »

1982 Chasse Spleen, Moulis

A big rich wine with lots of plummy red fruit and a smooth texture on the palate; a real plus in this vintage. Cellar a few years. Four stars according to Michael Broadbent: "Masses of notes as I bought it for drinking at home. Rich: colour, nose, and taste. Living up to its reputation. And, unlike many bourgeois clarets, not only holding on but, after 15 years, still with bouquet which opens in the glass." (05/97)

2015 Chasse-Spleen, Moulis (Pre-Arrival)

94 points James Suckling: "This delivers a stylish impression from the get-go with a really nicely focused dark berry nose and hints of fresh pastry. The palate has a smooth array of bright blackberry and plum fruits with smoothly cut tannins that layer up nice and even. Classy. Best from 2022." (2/2018) 92-94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Barrel Sample. The pure red-fruit flavors of this wine shoot through the firm tannins to give freshness while allowing plenty of space for the development of the tannins. It is a wine that shows both the fruit and the structure of the vintage. (RV)" (4/2016) 89-92 points Wine Spectator: "Enticing, with a tangy iro ...Read More »
