Philipponnat "Royale Réserve" Brut Champagne

SKU #999291 92 points Wine Enthusiast

A dry style, this classic nonvintage from Philipponnat is showing well, with greater depth than in the past. The wine has maturity, with toast, almonds and cookies, but retaining the acidity to give a wine that is mouthfilling and also refreshing. (12/2009)

91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

An attractively complex nose of brioche, pear and green apple leads to delicious flavors that possess excellent complexity as well as an aggressively effervescent nose that flirts with being foamy. There is excellent verve to the clean, crisp and well-balanced finish and this is drier than the dosage would typically suggest. (1/2013)

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Light, bright gold. Expansive aromas of nectarine and ripe citrus fruits enlivened by chalky mineral, ginger and floral nuances. At once broad and nervy, offering enticing fresh citrus and orchard fruit flavors and deeper lees and honey qualities. This silky, nicely concentrated brut finishes with strong thrust and repeating floral character. (1/2015)

91 points Wine Spectator

Crisp and mouthwatering, with well-knit acidity, this balanced bubbly shows a creamy mousse carrying subtle flavors of crunchy pear, white raspberry, lemon curd and chalky mineral. (11/2014)

90 points Wine & Spirits

The flavors are simple and clean, while the texture is luscious, creamy and round. The wine feels harmonious, complete. A generous young Champagne. (12/2007)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV Royale Reserve is wonderfully creamy and generous on the palate. Green apples, pears and white flowers are all layered into the expressive finish. This is a delicious entry-level Champagne to drink now and over the next few years. The current release is based on the 2007 vintage, with the addition of 26% reserve wines. Dosage was 8 grams per liter. This bottle was disgorged in August 2011. (AG) (11/2012)

K&L Notes

The house of Philipponnat is a neighbor of Billecart-Salmon in Mareuil sur Ay in the heart of Champagne. This wine is a big, toasty, yeasty wine made mostly from black fruit. It is composed of 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Meunier from vineyards on the Mountain of Reims, the Côtes de Blancs and the Valley of the Marne. They use 25% reserve wine, which is kept in a Solera and accounts for a lot of the complexity and richness in the wine. This wine has a ton of rich flavor for a very reasonable price.
