Laphroaig 10 year old Original Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Whisky 750ml

SKU #1009616 90-95 points Wine Enthusiast

A veritable aromatic feast of maritime notes: seaweed, iodine, pine needle, matchstick and olive brine. The palate entry is full of mint, Sherry, pork rind, bacon fat, chimney soot and rancio tastes; by midpalate flavors of cocoa, coffee, pipe tobacco, chocolate-covered orange, marzipan and vanilla extract proliferate. Luscious and stupendously good. (12/2007)

Whisky Advocate

Pungent and medicinal in personality, with gobs of peat, tar, iodine, brine, and seaweed. These are all good things.in case you were wondering. A gentle vanilla sweetness tries to tame this savage beast, but it is no match. One of the most challenging-yet rewarding-whiskies in the entire world. What Cantillion Lambic is to beer, Laphroaig Original Cask Strength is to whisky. (Vol. 13, #4)

Wine Spectator

Peaty You'll smell the peat immediately, but more rewards await. Honey candy beats out the expected peat on the palate, and when the smoke clears out come red fruit and hard candy flavors, especially with a splash of water. The long, honeyed finish brings bread dough. 57.8 ABV.

K&L Notes

From Whisky Magazine: "Nose: Fresh, mild antiseptic, subtle peat smoke; Palate: Complex. Smoked haddock, cut plug tobacco, burnt newspapers, but buttery, sweeter cooked fruit notes predominate; Finish: Chewy toffee drying out to oak; Comment: A fine robust dram with lots happening. Laphroaig at its best."

All the classic flavor of Laphroaig 10 but with the punch dialed up to max volume. Gotta love it!

Poll the people of Islay regarding their favorite whisky to drink, I'll argue that this one would be in the running for top billing. The truth of the matter is that Laphroaig's CS offering remains one of the single most impressive regular releases on the market. Laphroaig is nothing if not consistent in terms of quality and this release is no slouch. Massively powerful aromas on nose are not actually totally dominated by iodine and peat, but instead lead by powerful vanilla and sweet oak. ON the palate is where the powerful spirit shows through. Briny and textural, it can be mistaken for no other. With water the sweet oak on the nose gives way to more ocean water, white pepper, and some industrial grade smoke. You should rely on this whisky as it will always deliver.

I absolutely love Laphroaig to begin with. I was finally able to obtain the Cask Strength. OMG! This whisky is not for the faint of heart. To call it a monster peat smoke bomb is to state the obvious. If you like the peaty, smoky Laphroaig, you will love this. It is Laphroaig 10-year old times 10. The smoke hits you immediately, and then come layer upon layer of iodine, seaweed, and a long, long finish. Try it. You will either love it or hate it. There is no inbetween.
