Sandeman 20-year-old Tawny Port
*Editors' Choice* An elegant tawny, perfumed with soft tannins and a good edge of wood acidity and spirit. The wine is dry, densely flavored, tasting mature, showing a good balance between young sweetness and age, with everything well integrated.
This has a bright aromas, with notes of lemon zest and flavors of apricot, peach tart and caramel. The long finish echoes the fresh fruit, with lots of butterscotch and nut notes. Drink now.
Blend of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. The vines are planted on schist soils which have high heat retention properties, releasing warmth overnight and contributing to maturation of the fruit. The hand-picked grapes underwent stalk removal and crushing before temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel vats, with skin maceration to extract the best colour and flavour components. Ferment was arrested through the addition of grape alcohol and the newly fortified wine was then matured in small, old 600l oak casks of European oak in Vila Nova de Gaia, slowly developing its rich tawny hue. Winemaker Luís Sotomayor. TA 5.0 g/l, pH 3.55, RS 115 g/l. IWSC 2012 Gold Outstanding Medal. Pale rose colour. The wood seems to be not 100% pure but there is lots of complex development on this wine albeit with alcohol at the forefront.
