2012 Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland
Wine & Spirits
As always, Roland Velich’s basic Blaufränkisch is a seductive pleasure. It starts with the scent, purple and pretty in its floral overtones; then in the texture it feels full, supple and lifted. What sends it home is the purity of the flavors, a wash of purple fruit that recalls a Rothko in its depth and vibrant saturation.
So, you're thinking about getting into Blaufränkisch? When exploring an "alternative" varietal like this, albeit a major red wine of Austria for centuries, we highly recommend starting with a top producer like Moric. Writing about a previous vintage, wine writer Jamie Goode called it, "A serious Austrian red: Moric Blaufrankisch." New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov also had praise: "The Blaufränkisch grape is grown mostly in Austria, where it makes a spicy red wine that can be graceful yet intense, complex yet tangy and refreshing. My favorite Blaufränkisch producer, Moric, is a star in this world and fetches prices beyond many of these wines." (9/13/2011)
