2007 Château de Montfaucon Côtes du Rhône

Wine Advocate
A new discovery for me, the 2007 Cotes du Rhone (a 4,000+-case blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise) is a seriously built, concentrated, powerful effort displaying notes of garrigue, pepper, lavender, kirsch, and black currants. It also exhibits that wonderful seaweed wrapper (nori) scent that seems to be a characteristic of many southern Rhone wines. This full-bodied Cotes du Rhone will benefit from another 1-2 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 7-8 years.

Wine Enthusiast
The nose is opulently fruity, with strawberry top notes and an undercurrent of cherry liquor. There's more nuance on the palate with dense notes of olive and coffee. Grippy, medium finish. Try with barbecue.

K&L Notes
Just across the Rhône river from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this 88-acre estate is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe (in Châteauneuf). Montfaucon's 2007 Cotes du Rhône is a classic of Montfaucon. The focus is to express with finesse and elegance the intense fruit characteristics that Côtes du Rhône terroir can offer. The wine is a blend of classic Rhône grape varieties which include 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 15% each Cinsault and Carignan. It has been fermented and aged in concrete tanks only, without any influence from oak barrels.Enjoy this lovely wine now and over the next several years with a variety of dishes, including roast pork loin with sage or roasted rabbit with wild herbs. 14% abv.
