Ontañon is an amazing bodega, located just outside of Logroño, but sourcing fruit from their own vineyards in Rioja Baja. These are high elevation, fairly isolated, wild vineyards, many of which are gently sloping and on poor, stony soils. The wines here show the richness and generosity of fruit for which tempranillo and garnacha based Rioja Baja wines are known, but with an added elegance, texture and purity which only older vines from top notch vineyard sites can provide. Recently, the winery re-released some library selections to show just how well their wines can age. For anyone who doubts the ageworthiness of wines from Rioja Baja, they really ought to try wines such as this '91 from Ontañon, to discover that these are not only the equal of Rioja Alta's best, but also of similarly aged classified growth Bordeaux at half the price.
