2011 Meli Riesling Maule Valley
The bouquet here is crisp, dry and minerally, with a petrol scent. In the mouth, it feels snappy, cutting and citrusy, with orange and peach flavors. This is fruity and solid, with juicy acidity and a citrus-dominant character. Made using grapes from old vines planted in the 1950s.
Adriana Cerda, the experienced winemaker at this cooler climate Maule Valley estate, does not bother so much with the usual international varietals that have become Chile's calling card. No Cabernet or Sauvignon Blanc here. Rather, she does a little bit with Carignane as well as that most noble of white wine varietals: Riesling. Her take on it is dry, lip-smacking and refreshing, full of lemon and lime flavors that are direct but linger with intensity and real presence. It would be hard to imagine a more refreshing, dry Riesling coming from anywhere at this everyday price.
