NV Sean Thackrey Pleiades XVI
Finding information to share about Sean Thackrey's wines is about as challenging as locating Thackrey's Bolinas property, which is located an hour north of San Francisco in western Marin County. Thackrey's rustic winery-in-a-eucalyptus grove is only accessible via a twisting road that ends at the Pacific's edge, according to the Wine Spectator. The highly-allocated results are made in Thackrey's distinctive style: powerful and intense with rugged tannins using methods culled from ancient texts, mostly translated (Thackrey reads seven languages). The easiest to find and most affordable of Sean Thackrey's wines; this is the sixteenth vintage of the Pleiades blend. Named for the Pleiades star cluster (also called the Seven Sisters) this wine is a blend of syrah, sangiovese, mourvèdre, barbera, carignane, petite sirah and viognier, among others. Thackrey blends by taste and doesn't keep track of the fruit that ends up in each blend so it's different from year to year. Juicy fruit, earth and Thackrey's signature eucalyptus note.
