 (80% tempranillo, 15% garnacha, 3% graciano and 2% mazuelo): Dark red. A kaleidoscopic bouquet evokes candied red fruits, incense, pipe tobacco and potpourri, with hints of woodsmoke, leather and Asian spices gaining strength in the glass. Silky and sweet, with intense raspberry liqueur and bitter cherry flavors that take a darker turn with air. Tangy acidity adds lift and focus to a strikingly long, sappy finish.  The 1995 Vina Bosconia Gran Reserva has an alluring leather, dried orange peel and strawberry leaf scented bouquet that blossoms beautifully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, elegant tannins. It is both precise and exquisitely defined with hints of cured meat and leather towards the graceful finish. Drink now-2018+  (8/2012)

Lopez de Heredia makes some of the most traditional wines in Rioja. Wines that are elegant, lithe, ageworthy (and often ageless), ethereal, and must-haves for any serious cellar. The Bosconia gran reservas often times mimic very good, aged Burgundy. As the winery keeps an extensive library in their constantly cool, humid, mold covered cellar, the provenance of these bottles is typically first rate. Lopez de Heredia: true artisans, keepers of the flame, and if you ask us, a Spanish national treasure. Viña Bosconia refers to their "Finca el Bosque," which is outlined by a forest. Here, the breakdown is higher in Tempranillo (80%) with about 15% Garnacha and 5% Mazuelo and Graciano. As a result, there is typically bright, high toned red fruit to complement the classic sous bois notes and chalky minerality of these Riojas. María José Lopez de Heredia has been known to say that you are either a Tondonia or Bosconia guy. While I love the reds from Viña Tondonia as well, I am undoubtedly a "Bosconia guy." Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
