1998 Domaine Janasse "Cuvee Chaupin" Châteanuneuf-du-Pape
Much denser than the normal cuvée, with pain d'épice, date, fig, mint and sweet tobacco notes. The long finish is very plush, with a bacony note. Still has some grip to shed. A beauty.--1998 Châteauneuf-du-Pape retrospective. Drink now through 2020.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Janasse’s 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin has reached full maturity. Some rust and orange at the edge are evidence of that, in addition to its complex, open-knit nose of roasted herbs, sweet black cherries, loamy soil, pepper, and spice. Fleshy, full-bodied, with a velvety mouthfeel, considerable opulence, and an expansive richness, this wine is best drunk now and over the next 5-7 years.

Full deep red. Bright but reticent aromas of blackberry, violet, licorice and meat. Vibrant, intensely flavored and sharply delineated, with terrific depth and grip. Very ripe but firmly built. Perhaps more typical Grenache than the '99, thanks to the great ripeness of the year. Finishes very long and subtle, with firm but sweet tannins.
