2004 Fattoria Le Pupille "Saffredi" Maremma Toscana
Shows a very ripe nose, with rose, berry and hints of meat. Full-bodied and powerful, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. Massive yet balanced. What a wine. The greatest Saffredi ever made. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Alicante. Better than previously reviewed. Best after 2012.
Elisabetta Geppetti’s 2004 Saffredi shows the sexiness and silkiness of this great Tuscan vintage. Here it is the expressive bouquet and silky tannins that stand out most. The 2004 can be enjoyed today and over the next decade or so. Saffredi is one of my favorite Maremma wines and 2004 is one of the top vintages. (Antonio Galloni)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2004 Saffredi is utterly captivating. Dried roses cherries, berries and sweet spices emerge from the glass as the wine reveals its gorgeous inner fragrance. The 2004 isn’t the most powerful or rich Saffredi, rather it conquers the palate and intellect with inimitable finesse. The silkiness of the tannins, expressiveness of the bouquet and sheer purity of the fruit all have much in common with the finest 2004 Barolos. In short, this is a magical bottle readers should not be without. The 2004 is the first Saffredi in which Alicante was replaced with Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. (AG)
