2009 Celler Can Blau "Mas de Can Blau" Montsant Spain

SKU #1108627 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

(40% each of carinena and syrah, with 20% garnacha): Opaque purple. Exotic, pungent aromas of black and blue fruits, vanillin oak, incense and candied flowers. Ripe and spicy on the palate, offering sweet boysenberry and blueberry preserve qualities and strong notes of coffee, vanilla and cherry-cola. A zesty mineral quality adds lift and bite to the long, sappy, sweet finish. (10/2011)

This is deep and attractive, with complex aromas of balsam wood, ripe black fruit and bacon. It feels really good and dense,w ith pastry, roasted berry, chocolate and molasses flavors. The finish is long, flavorful and rewarding. A modern wine to drink now-2016. (12/2012)

89 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A blend of 35% Mazuelo, 35% Syrah and 30% Garnacha the 2009 Mas de Can Blau has a lifted nose of blueberry cheesecake, black olives and a touch of licorice, with nicely integrated oak that is a little pinched at first. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and plenty of ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit. It seems tauter and more poised than some of Gil Family Estate's other wines and should drink nicely over 2 or 3 years. Drink now-2016. (2/2013)

K&L Notes

This is Cellar Can Blau's signature wine, made from 50% Cariñena, 30% Syrah and 20% Garnacha grown in the DO of Montsant. Aged for 18 months in new oak, the wine's name, which can be transalted to mean "more than Can Blau" is quite apt--there's more of everything that's in the Blau and Can Blau. Earthy, full-bodied and full of dark fruit, spice and vanilla bean-spiked mocha. Enjoy after a couple years in your cellar and over the next decade.
