1980 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour" Private Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
I have rated this wine higher in the past(94 points, April 1992), but at this tasting (February, 1995) the wine exhibited fine intensity, full maturity, a good, spicy, rich, savory character, and excellent concentration. (RP)
Mature but complex cedar, coffee and currant flavors, finishing with dill and sage notes and a glimmer of berry.
In 1900, when Georges de Latour decided to buy a small, four-acre property in the town of Rutherford as a surprise for his wife he, perhaps unwittingly, purchased a piece of Napa Valley history. Under the direction of André Tchelistcheff, the winery would fast become one of California's preeminent producers. This 1980 Private Reserve is definitely among the best produced by Beaulieu in the 1980s with an aromatic display of sweet fruit and oak spice that carry over to the palate. Intensely structured, this wine was guaranteed a long life.
