 (30 percent new French oak) Bright violet. Potent, mineral-accented dark berry, cola and licorice scents are complemented by hints of allspice, mocha and candied flowers. Fleshy and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated cassis, cherry-vanilla and violet pastille flavors that are underscored by a vein of smoky minerality. Creamy mouthfeel, floral aspects, sweet raspberry and black cherry, perhaps just into plum. It’s a seductive wine, no doubt. Mount Langi Ghiran is certainly putting out excellent reds right now. Cliff Edge Shiraz has been in good form of late."

This wine allows you to get a taste of one of the most highly acclaimed estates in all of Australia for an absolute song! This wine is crafted entirely from estate fruit on Mt. Langi's property in Victoria's Grampian Mountains. Showing a lot of the same characters as its big brother, the 2015 Cliff Edge is wildly aromatic with juicy black and blue fruit, lifted spices, cracked black pepper and violets. On the palate this mountain grown Shiraz is concentrated and fruit forward but never loses focus with bright acidity and beautiful line and length. Such an energetic and vibrant wine exuding wave after wave of exotic fruit and spice. Rich but light on its feet with long fine tannins and floral lift in the finish.

The Cliff Edge is supple, rich, and lively. A fantastic combination for both easy drinking and food pairing. This Shiraz comes from cooler climate sites and is picked early for freshness, but doesn't lack for beautiful ripe fruits and a little touch of peppery soul. It's a great bottle to pair with a summer BBQ or to just bring to your next casual office party happy hour.

The nose of this wine is bold and gives you a sense of ripeness but at the same time it’s not over the top. I was a little surprised by its balance, I’m not a fan of thick, heavy lifeless Syrah but this wine has some verve and snap to it. Don’t misunderstand this is still a highly polished, supple, warm and round wine it’s just that it does have some lift and energy to it. I was surprised that the alcohol was only 13.8%, not that it seemed higher but it would be hard to get a California wine to that level these days. Excellent wine-making and good fruit, bold grilled meat would be a nice accompaniment.

This bottling features the same estate and same winemaking that is responsible for producing one of the best reviewed and highest-end Shiraz's in Australia, the Langi Shiraz. This is the little brother of that wine, though it features nearly all the same phenomenal, cool-climate characteristics. This Shiraz come from the mountainous regions of Victoria, which are Yosemite-like in their setting. The granite in the area lends fantastic minerality and depth to this wine, with lifted fruit and bright acidity punching through. There is a nice spice backdrop here, with deep flavors and a silky finish. Those familiar with the label will no be surprised at the quality here, and newcomers will be in awe of the elegant style.

According to many, this is one of the top five Shiraz producers in all Australia. Judging by the quality of this sub $25 bottling, I can see why. Pure blue fruit shows intensity and freshness, with a subtle underlying littoral forest aspect - not full on eucalyptus but definitely a little bit. The tannins are incredibly supple, and as delicious as this wine is now, it has both the balance and the stuffing for improvement in bottle.

Shiraz/Syrah

- One of France's noblest black grape varieties, Syrah is known for its intense and distinctive perfume reminiscent of briar fruit, tar, spice and black pepper and its firm structure. One of few black grape varietals frequently vinified on its own, the best examples of Syrah come from the Northern Rhône, particularly Hermitage, but also Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph. These wines are very astringent in their youth, though some Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph can be enjoyed young, relatively speaking. Given the requisite patience, though, these wines can reveal amazing complexity and secondary fruit characteristics like plum and blackcurrant as well as subtle hints of smoke and flowers. In the Southern Rhône, Syrah is used to add structure and complexity to wines dominated by Grenache and complemented by Mourvèdre, like the more immediately drinkable Côte du Rhônes, as well as the long-lived wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In recent years, plantings of Syrah have spread throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon where it is produced on its own or blended with other varietals. Outside of France, the most important Syrah growing country is easily Australia, where it is called Shiraz. Quality levels here depend greatly on yields and geography, and the wines range from bold, fruity and easy-drinking to intense and ageable, like the famed Penfolds Grange. Often bottled on its own, in Australia Syrah is also can be blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre, as in the Southern Rhône, and is increasingly combined with Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah has also been steadily increasing in popularity in California, thanks to a group of advocates called the Rhône Rangers. Its most successful iterations come from the Central and Sonoma Coasts, where winemakers are pushing boundaries and creating some incredible wines. In recent years Syrah has also found a number of proponents in Washington State, which is definitely a region to watch for this variety.

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim. While many equate Aussie wines with “value,” there are more than a few extremely rare and pricey options, which never fail to earn the highest ratings from wine publications and critics throughout the world.
