2015 Ronco Blanchis Pinot Grigio Collio (Previously $15)

SKU #1294308 92 points James Suckling

Complex aromas of sliced apples, lemon curd and hot stones. Medium to full body, beautiful fruit and a bright finish. I like the layered texture to this. (11/2016)

Wine Enthusiast

White spring flower, white stone fruit and a whiff of crushed stone come together on this. Bright and savory, the medium-bodied palate presents ripe Bartlett pear, golden apple and tangerine zest while a hint of aromatic herb wraps up the finish. (KO) (8/2017)

A wine of this quality and pedigree from Italy's Collio region is normally several dollars higher in price so we're doubly delighted to offer this top tier Pinot Grigio at $15. Because it's from Collio, you'll notice a bit more complexity, weight and texture than is normally found in most Pinot Grigios and it continues to impress our customers. Although it's wonderful as a starter wine, don't hesitate to pair it with fish, soups, poultry and egg dishes.

A bold nose filled with the spice and minerality common from the soil of the region. The palate is long and clean with lifted citrus notes and a long mineral finish. There is also a beautiful weight on the mid palate stemming from the exceptional 2015 vintage that grows and develops with complexity as the wine opens in the glass.

What a steal! This is a perfect example of the marl and clay from the Collio DOC. Not only do you have the great fruit of golden apples and citrus - but you get a wonderful minerality and salinity too. A little more textural than you might expect for the typical Italian style of Pinot Grigio, there is just enough body to satisfy and stand up to a rich meal. Top marks.

The Collio region is usually thought of as one of Italy’s premier white wine growing areas and the bounty of incredible wines from the stellar 2015 vintage continues with this exceptional Pinot Grigio. The nose is full of white flowers and ripe pear that are forceful and dynamic, too often I find PG’s to be rather one note and simple but this wine has real depth in its aromatics. On the palate the wine has weight, and a luscious texture, it has no wood yet still shows a creamy texture but accented by vibrant acidity that brings the focus back to the center. The finish is lengthy, a replay of pear and spice highlighted by the crisp acid that slices into the wine’s luscious richness.

The 2015 Pinot Grigio has really nice concentration, ripe apple, and peach stones, with hints of lemon peel and wet stone. Medium-bodied, with a good grip and a long, memorable finish, great for just sipping on in the evening or would love something with a lot of spice.

Varietal:

Pinot Gris

- Also known as Pinot Gris in France, where it originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir. The berries can vary in color from yellowish to bluish-violet producing wines that range from white to slightly pink. The most successful wines from the grape come from the Collio in Friuli (Northeast Italy), where the wines are light- to medium-bodied, crisp, dry and, because of their high acidity, complementary to the region's foods like speck, Prosciutto di San Daniele and polenta. In Alsace, where the grape takes a back seat to more popular varietals like Gewürztraminer and Riesling, it is generally rich and honeyed. Other successful plantings of Pinot Grigio exist in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Romania, with even smaller amounts planted in British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand and California.
