Located in the center of Savigny-les-Beaune, the cellars of Henri de Villamont are some of the most impressive in Burgundy and date back to the 1880s. Today the property is owned by the Swiss company Schenk and holds a number of prestigious contracts with local growers, in addition to ten hectares of domaine vineyards. Meursault's "Clos du Cromin" vineyard is located at the foot of the hill of Volnay and is known for producing wines with aromatic lift and balance. The 2014 Villamont builds on that freshness, for a leaner, more mineral-driven expression than one typically finds in Meursault. There are subtle notes of oak on the finish, but it's clear this wine's core is built around fresh and vibrant acidity.

I can't say enough good things about this 2014 vintage for white Burgundy. What wonderful precision and focus the wines have. I have blown my wine budget over the past couple of months filling up the cellar. The trick though is to find great wines at affordable prices that you can drink tonight. This 2014 Henri De Villamont Meursault Clos Du Cromin is one such. Lightly floral on the nose with a hint of oak. Makes an immediate impression on the palate with lovely weight. The rich texture is balanced by bracing acidity that keeps the wine lively and fresh. Drink now or over the next one to three years. A terrific value in a villages Meursault.

Why do we love Meursault so much? Because when it is on, like this unbelievable 2014 Henri De Villamont is on, it truly has it all. The Clos Du Cromin has fabulous richness matched to bright vitality. The flavors are complex and layered with pretty white fruit, subtle vanilla and a component that reminds me of beurre d'isigny. I have been telling everyone who will listen to buy heavy on the great 2014's, and this is a super star and all at a very reasonable direct import price!

This is an elegant take on Meursault that really speaks to the qualities of the 2014 vintage in Burgundy: the whites are clean and easy to drink. In Meursault, there were some reduced yields due to hail, but the wines that I've tasted thus far have been outstanding. The '14 "Clos du Cromin" is every bit as impressive as the Decanter review describes. It's fresh on the palate with length through the finish and it offers classic Burgundian flavors of toasty oak and stone fruit with a nuttiness on the finish. I'm hoping we can find more direct deals like this one from the vintage.

Typically when I think of Meursault I picture creamy, rounded waves of riper fruit and toastier oak than what I might find in Chassagne and Puligny, but that's not the case at all with the 2014 Villamont "Clos du Cromin." If I had tasted this blind I might have said Montrachet, mostly because of the focused and laser-like acidity that keeps this wine moving from front to back. The fruit is much more delicate than I was expecting, almost citric in nature, and the nuance of the underlying flavors (toasted almonds and tropical fruits) are accented by a tasteful amount of oak. It's a lovely white Burgundy that moves with lithe elegance over the palate.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. - The town of Meursault is a prosperous village, with a Gothic town hall and narrow winding streets. It produces a small amount of red wine, but is justly famous for its whites. Although it has no Grand Cru vineyards, its Premiers Crus are justly famous, particularly Charmes, Poruzots, Perrières and Genevrières. A good Meursault has concentration, grip and backbone, in addition to its soft and rich fruit.
