2015 Blason Pinot Grigio Isonzo

SKU #1258307

Giovanni Blason and his wife Valentina are young producers who continuously surprise us with the price-to-quality ratio of their wines, earning them tons of kudos in Gambero Rosso and beyond. They come from the Isonzo region of Northern Italy, right up against the Slovenian border. Their Pinot Grigio is really sensational, full in the mouth, rich on the palate and extraordinarily drinkable at this price! Very aromatic, with good complexity, length and that subtle elegance that shows muscle and a long and flowing finish.

The nose of this wine immediately says this is not another Pinot Grigio, not a watery, simplistic, grocery store version, this is a wine. The nose is full of white flower, ripe pear and with hints of fennel, but beyond the aromatic palette there is a complexity that sends images of a certain density. On the palate the wine does have a richness that passes across your tongue and leaves that ripe pear flavors with hints of fennel. The finish is full and broad and leaves an inviting savory snap, wonderful acidity in this wine, that is asking for food! Perfect for roasted chicken or a pasta with chicken sausage!

Greg St.Clair’s review of this lovely Gem on our web-site is right on target! This is not your typically watery, simple Pinot Grigio. This is a for real white wine with fleshiness and depth of character. We have been importing the Blason wines for well over ten years now, ever since Greg discovered them way back when, and each year their wines seem to knock up the quality by a notch or two. This gorgeous Pinot Grigio is perhaps the best that has come from them thus far; of course, 2015 is a great vintage in Europe, and this wine totally reflects that fact. Rich and lush, the nose shows high perfumed amounts of jasmine and cream, with hints of pear and anise, while in the mouth it is deep in flavor, yet balanced and lush across a clean, crisp, and mouthwatering mid-range and finish. The Bean wants me to bring home several cases of this Gem; she wants it with her seared ahi tuna dinners. A SUPERB WHITE WINE VALUE! >>>A K&L WINE MERCHANTS’ DIRECT IMPORT<<< ***** 12.5% ABV *****

Aromas of lilies upfront transition towards orchids, green apple, and citrus pith. Hints of faint stone fruit also present. On the palate, juicier than expected with mouthwatering acidity. Bitter almond notes move into lemon, lime, and yellow apple. Light and refreshing

This is a mouthful of Pinot Grigio and a wine that has body and is perfectly balanced with zippy acidity and very aromatic, good complexity, length and that subtle elegance that shows muscle and long and flowing finish. It is a little spicy with red apple and melon, and LOTS of minerals on the aftertaste

The Blason Pinot Grigio from Friuli Isonzo is a fine expression of Pinot Grigio at an incomparable price point! Aromas and flavors of golden delicious apple, lime zest and ripe comice pear are counterbalanced by a dry, somewhat chalky undertone and saline minerality. The pleasingly viscous mouthfeel is zipped up neatly by a tart green apple finish. A fantastic springtime selection that may be enjoyed all through the summer months.

This is an awesome value every vintage but it's especially good this time around thanks to the exceptional 2015 vintage. An aromatic array of apple skin, melon and hints of red fruit and a surprisingly delicious palate make this a fantastic everyday white.

Pinot Gris

- Also known as Pinot Gris in France, where it originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir. The berries can vary in color from yellowish to bluish-violet producing wines that range from white to slightly pink. The most successful wines from the grape come from the Collio in Friuli (Northeast Italy), where the wines are light- to medium-bodied, crisp, dry and, because of their high acidity, complementary to the region's foods like speck, Prosciutto di San Daniele and polenta. In Alsace, where the grape takes a back seat to more popular varietals like Gewürztraminer and Riesling, it is generally rich and honeyed. Other successful plantings of Pinot Grigio exist in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Romania, with even smaller amounts planted in British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand and California.
