2011 Alberto Nanclares "Dandelion" Albariño Rias Baixas

SKU #1162560

Dandelion is a lovely Albariño blended from a few different parcels in Rias Baixas. Bright flavors of lime and hints of lemongrass predominate, with a clarity of flavors and linear style that distinguishes this wine from other Albariños. Based in O Castrelo, a village just a few kilometers away from the town of Cambados, Alberto Nanclares excels in carefully grown, non manipulated, acid driven Albariño wines amongst the purest we have yet to taste. A serious vigneron, he owns or rents out various parcels, barely adding up to 6 or so acres. Everything is worked by hand by Alberto, and the winery has a "produccion integrada" certification, which though it's not technically an organic certification, we can assure you that the approach and use of local and organic products for vine and soil health is way above and beyond minimum organic standards in most parts of the world. In the cellar, Alberto allows the wine to express itself through separate fermentations of distinct vineyard parcels, native yeast fermentation, natural stabilization and otherwise nothing else added. His pH's are extremley low, and acidity levels extremely high; therefore these are not wines for the faint of heart (or those lacking antacids!) but they are clearly amongst the most exciting wines in the region right now. One of the best Albarinos I have tasted, period! This is not a wine for those afraid of a little acidity. It has laser-like focus and a firm acid line...but that is what I love about it. It's pure, racy, mineral-infused and zesty. The wine is fleshed out just a touch by a lovely, slightly raw leesy element that adds a nice savory grain or yeasty edge to the citrus blossom and purity of fruit. Serious wine to contemplate. A real benchmark wine for me.

Aside from the playful groovy label, which has a line drawing of tiny people being blown along in the wind holding onto a dandelion puff, this is one serious Albarino! There is an interesting Riesling-like slate quality here, with tropical papaya and apricot playing off of citrus and mineral. Medium plus acidity with great balance and brightness. Love Albarino? Pick this one up as part of your regular rotation!
