2012 Celler de Capçanes "Mas Donis Barrica Old Vines" Montsant

SKU #1161852 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Another baby Priorato, the 2012 Mas Donis, a custom cuvee from Eric Solomon, is composed of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah aged nine months in both new and used French and American oak. The Grenache comes from 70-year-old vines, and the Syrah from 30-year-old vines. It is difficult to find a better value than this incredibly rich effort. The bouquet offers up a smorgasbord of aromas, including crushed rocks, spring flowers, kirsch liqueur and blacker fruits. Full-bodied with a velvety, voluptuous texture, and admirable opulence, density, purity and texture... (RP) (11/2013)

85% garnacha and 15% syrah): Bright purple. Expressive aromas of dark berries, cracked pepper and violet, with a smoky overtone. Pliant black and blue fruit flavors pick up a licorice nuance with air and show very good, mineral-driven intensity. Finishes with strong stony cut, the licorice and floral notes repeating. K&L Notes

From the D.O. of Montsant in Cataluña, the appellation and its 2000 hectares of vineyard were designated in 2001 to highlight their superior quality of the region. Montsant actually wraps around the celebrated Priorat. While the soils generally contain less schist than Priorat, the measure of quality in the wines is perhaps more importantly enabled by their old vine status. This is especially true for Garnacha, which comprises 85% of this blend and is primarily from an indigenous clone called Garnacha del Pais. Grapes are selectively hand-harvested and the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before being aged for nine months in seasoned French and American oak barrels. The wine is marked by its textured and mouth-filling profile, with vibrant cherry and dark berry flavors highlighted by vanilla and spice with subtle shades of herbs and toast. Polished tannins highlight a finish that retains freshness and minerality.

Wow, is this the best Mas Donis we've seen yet? I think so. It still shows its hallmark big, deep blackberry fruit, but really brings in another quality with the up-front spiciness and rose petal notes. The wonderful dark berry fruit and spice comes through all the way to the palate and long into the finish. Great job!
