2012 Envinate "Parcela Seoane" Ribeira Sacra

SKU #1161758 Jancis Robinson

Dark, transparent crimson. Headily scented mulberry notes and uncompromisingly austere on the finish after some very pure fruit on the mid palate. This is one of their wines described as 'Vino Atlánticos' on the label. in the glass it opens out and displays much more seductive, richer fruit on the palate. Wine for food and thought. Definitely not for neophytes. There seem to be some strong 'mineral' notes on the palate. Throbs a bit on the finish. Very distinctive. (4/2014)

K&L Notes

Envinate was founded by four young winemakers-to-be who teamed up after studying enology in Alicante. The name means "wine-yourself," and although thoroughly contemporary in their outlook, their focus is on exploring the "ancient, Atlantic-infused terruños of Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands," according to the importer. "Their philosophy is simple; let each parcela or single parcel fully express itself by utilizing old-fashioned farming and wine-making methods." This includes foot-stomping and whole-cluster fermentations in small vats, bottling directly from the barrel! Open a bottle to an Iberian adventure.

This elegant, feminine expression of Mencia from Ribera Sacra has completely changed my mind about the wines of this region. A single parcel expression, the wines shows beautiful red fruits--red cherry, strawberry, raspberry and red roses with medium plus acidity and medium tannin. Absolutely worth the splurge if you are seeking an unusual wine which drinks gracefully, and is not intimidating--but which your friends and family will most definitely enjoy with everything from roasted chicken, pork tenderloin, turkey, ribs, lamb or steak.
