2011 Fonplégade, St-Emilion (Previously $37.00)
Shows serious concentration of fruit for the vintage, with a medium to full body, fine tannins and a juicy finish. Beautiful, pure fruit, with licorice and berries. Needs a few years to come together: try in 2017.
Delivers a gorgeous bolt of raspberry ganache, with blueberry and plum compote notes, lined with anise and carrying through a briary, spice-infused finish. This has ample grip and more than enough flesh, offering lovely fruit and a rather suave feel. A strong showing for the vintage. Best from 2016 through 2026.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The resurrection and rebound in quality of Fonplegade under the Adams family of America, who hired consulting oenologist Michel Rolland, has been remarkable. The 2011 continues to provide convincing evidence of their commitment to quality. Slightly more narrowly constructed than usual, it possesses good purity along with lots of red and black fruits and minerality in a medium-bodied, compact style. Nevertheless, it should age nicely for a decade or more.
