 **Good Value** This well-mannered Syrah is ripe without being close to excess and is more full-bodied than not yet is impeccably balanced. It is on the varietal track with its hints of dark berries and spice, and while it is not in contention for boldness, it more than earns full marks for its solid structure and its ability to make grilled steaks, standing rib roasts and garlicky legs of lamb taste even better. It can hold for a bit but this priceworthy wine works even now.  (7/2014)

 Created in 1982 by Dan Lee (Dan's middle name is Morgan), this estate produces a bevy of solid wines, all of which lean to the more fresh, focused end of the spectrum. The Double L Vineyard (which stands for Double Luck and named so after the birth of twins) is the estate vineyards and it lies in the cooler, more northern end of appellation. Dan commented that the 2012 vintage was a glorious vintage that had no problems or rains, and was an easy vintage to make good wines. Made from 80% Syrah, and 10% each of Grenache and Tempranillo, the 2012 Syrah G17 offers a bright, fresh and lively profile to go with plenty of darker fruits, peppery herbs, cedar and charred earth. This medium-bodied, focused and nicely put together effort will have 4-5 years of enjoyable drinking.  (10/2014)

May seem a bit young for a Syrah of this quality, but the combination of intense, grilled meat Syrah aromas with a tangy, lingering palate of red plum sauce might make an excellent picnic split now, with the right sandwiches! It's a blend of 80% Syrah, 10% Tempranillo and 10% Grenache from northern and central Monterey County. "Here, the fog burns off early allowing ample sunshine to warm temperatures to the mid 80’s during the summer and fall," according to the winery's notes. "The rising warm air draws the cool winds from Monterey Bay in the late afternoon. By night time, temperatures cool to the low 50’s. After back to back years of below normal temperatures, 2012 was a “textbook” growing season, with seasonal temperatures and more predictable weather patterns....This Rhone-style blend has a rich ruby red color, highlighted with purple edges. Raspberry, cedar and milk chocolate aromas jump out of the glass. The wine is medium-bodied with soft tannins; it offers a mouthful of plum, sour cherry and pepper flavors. Its weight and balance make it a perfect pairing with anything off the grill."

- One of France's noblest black grape varieties, Syrah is known for its intense and distinctive perfume reminiscent of briar fruit, tar, spice and black pepper and its firm structure. One of few black grape varietals frequently vinified on its own, the best examples of Syrah come from the Northern Rhône, particularly Hermitage, but also Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph. These wines are very astringent in their youth, though some Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph can be enjoyed young, relatively speaking. Given the requisite patience, though, these wines can reveal amazing complexity and secondary fruit characteristics like plum and blackcurrant as well as subtle hints of smoke and flowers. In the Southern Rhône, Syrah is used to add structure and complexity to wines dominated by Grenache and complemented by Mourvèdre, like the more immediately drinkable Côte du Rhônes, as well as the long-lived wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In recent years, plantings of Syrah have spread throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon where it is produced on its own or blended with other varietals. Outside of France, the most important Syrah growing country is easily Australia, where it is called Shiraz. Quality levels here depend greatly on yields and geography, and the wines range from bold, fruity and easy-drinking to intense and ageable, like the famed Penfolds Grange. Often bottled on its own, in Australia Syrah is also can be blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre, as in the Southern Rhône, and is increasingly combined with Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah has also been steadily increasing in popularity in California, thanks to a group of advocates called the Rhône Rangers. Its most successful iterations come from the Central and Sonoma Coasts, where winemakers are pushing boundaries and creating some incredible wines. In recent years Syrah has also found a number of proponents in Washington State, which is definitely a region to watch for this variety.
