2009 Remelluri Reserva Rioja

SKU #1154580 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2009 Remelluri Reserva aims at showing the character of Remelluri, as this is the first modern vintage that does not have grapes purchased from external suppliers. These grapes are now in the Lindes range of wines, but in the past they were blended with the estate grapes. The cool Remelluri vineyards behave very well in warmer years. This 2009 is very clean with predominant aromas of earthy red fruit intermixed with notes of vanilla and cinnamon, a satin texture with round, fine-grained tannins and quite classical and very well-proportioned style. This is a great vintage for Remelluri Reserva. (LG) (12/2013)

Deep ruby. Sexy, floral- and mineral-accented red fruit aromas pick up a smoky nuance with air. Lithe and precise, offering sweet raspberry and cherry flavors that gain weight and power in the glass. Very young but promising, with excellent finishing clarity and sweet, gently tannic persistence. Shows an impressively graceful character for the vintage. (JR) (10/2013)

Sappy and lively and well-intentioned Rioja. Real character. (9/2013)

K&L Notes

According to Wine Advocate: "The Remelluri name should be well-known...The big news here was the return of Telmo Rodriguez, who left the family winery to start his own projects throughout Spain, but returned in February 2010. Many changes have been made, and more will come...he's clearly separating the wines produced with the estate grapes and those produced with grapes purchased from external suppliers, for which he has created the line Lindes de Remelluri (Remelluri borders). He's also implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards." (LG, 12/2013)

This Tempranillo is rounder and more lush than some of our other Riojas, but its old vine pedigree shines through in its complexity. Its soft plum and fig flavors and mellow acidity are wrapped in a long finish of white pepper. It's a remarkable wine from a good vintage and a legendary vineyard.

Additional Information:

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
