2012 Martinelli "Giuseppe & Luisa" Russian River Valley Zinfandel
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Bright ruby. Spicy cherry and blueberry scents are complemented by notes of vanilla, lavender and peppery spices. Plush and juicy on the palate, offering intense dark fruit liqueur flavors that are lifted and sharpened by gentle acidity and a touch of white pepper. Shows very good clarity on the finish, with the floral and spice notes echoing. There's 17.3% alcohol here, by the way, but it's remarkably well hidden.
Lee Martinelli, Sr. planted the Giuseppe and Luisa vineyard on a knoll above the winery, several miles east of the family's famed Jackass Hill vineyard. Unusually for Zinfandel, it's planted at a density of 2,000 vines per acre; typical of Zinfandel, it's often a hedonistic, fruit-forward wine. Winery's note: "The 2012 Giuseppe and Luisa Zinfandel has a superbly ripe nose of blackberry, bright cherry bramble, plum, orange and mint. The palate is poised and centered red raspberry, cassis, golden currants and plum. Drink 2014 – 2022."
