2012 Bosquet des Papes "Tradition" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival)

Bottled in March, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape is ripe, textured and downright sexy wine that has overflowing notes of sweet cherries, raspberry, chocolate and spice all emerging from the glass. This full-bodied, dense, concentrated and layered effort is one of the top efforts in the vintage, and will have upward of two decade of longevity. In my view, no estate has made more qualitative gains in the past 3-4 years than Bosquet des Papes. I still remember being floored by the quality of their 2010s, and they've almost matched those efforts with these incredible 2012s. In addition, the 2013s are easily some of the top wines in this irregular, difficult vintage. If you're looking for the next superstar producer in Châteauneuf du Pape, here you go! (JD)
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Deep ruby. Smoky cherry, cassis and black pepper on the nose, with hints of olive, violet and dark chocolate adding complexity. Big, mouthfilling and chewy, but with surprising vivacity to its fleshy dark berry and floral pastille flavors. Firm and focused on the finish, with supple tannins adding support and shape. Nicely concentrated for an entry-level bottling
Solid, with mesquite and singed cedar notes framing a juicy core of steeped raspberry and red currant fruit. Iron, rooibos tea and tobacco accents line the finish. A somewhat old-school version fleshed out by juicy fruit. Best from 2015 through 2025.
Vivid ruby-red. Spice-tinged red berry, cherry and lavender scents are complemented by deeper suggestions of candied licorice. On the palate, taut redcurrant, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors put on weight and gain sweetness with aeration while maintaining vivacity. The floral quality gains power on the finish, which features supple tannins and a touch of smokiness. Very drinkable now but I'd hold off on uncorking this wine for a couple more years.
(Vineyard soil: galets, sand, clay-limestone. Lieu-dit: Esquirons, Trois Coups, Boursan, Barbe D’asne, Mont Redon, Gardioles, Pignan, Montpertuis, Grandes Serres, Terres Blanches, Bosquet. Grape varieties: 75% Grenache, 12% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 3% Cinsault.) Crimson. Gamey nose and massive substance - both fruit concentration and tannin. An ambitious wine made for the long term with lots packed in there though a possible shortage of juice. Marvel at how thick those grape skins must have been! Hint of coffee grounds on the end. Drink 2020-2030.
