 Medium green-yellow. Aromas and flavors of greengage plum complemented by apricot, brown spices and flint. This very well-balanced, elegant wine offers a juicy mouth feel. The refreshing, firm finish of mango and lime demonstrates finesse. A serious wine that is nonetheless easy to drink.  (12/2009)

"The Malat estate is near Krems, in Palt, between the southern bank of the Danube and the Gottweiger Mountain. An especially beneficial microclimate marks the region. White and red wines thrive on primary rocks, and on a loess and gravel mixture and clay. The Hohlgraben vineyard is the Malat estate's most historic and probably also most important Veltliner plantation. There are seven vineyards within the area, all slightly different from each other. The soil is all classic loess with south to south west exposure. Hohlgraben lies at the foot of the Gottweiger Stiftsberg. This wine shows extraordinarily vibrant and beautifully sculpted expression of GV - snap-pea and other kitchen-garden aromas, lovely pear and peach notes, acids nicely focused and interwoven; charming minerality and excellent balance." Gruner Veltliner

- Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, making up about a third of all the vineyard land in the country, according to importer extraordinaire Terry Thiese. The varietal has definitely increased in popularity of the past few years, as sommeliers and wine directors loaded their lists with this spicy white because it pairs well with so many things. Its bouquet has been described as floral, tending to toward musky, with hints of peppery greens, lentils, citrus and red fruit with a distinctive mineral quality. In the mouth the wine can be broad or precise, but is almost always distinguished by bracing acidity and flavors that mirror the nose. A notoriously good ager, you can drink GrüVes in their youth, or let them evolve in complexity in your cellar.
