K&L Notes

Really exciting wine...the back story on this is that while in college I once found a few closeout cases of Swan Valley Verdelho in a random rundown corner shop liquor store...long story short, the stuff was delicious and it became our house wine for as long as the supply lasted! While traveling in Swan Valley some years later I was excited to taste this lovely bottle from Sittella and be transported back to my first discovery of Verdelho from Swan Valley. The region has a long history of producing the varietal but it was originally used for fortified wines like the ones of its ancestral home the island of Madeira. The multiple award winning 2013 Sittella Verdelho is dry, fresh and combines citrus flavors with richer, fleshier stone fruits and even some lush tropical notes. The wine is soft and generous in texture with gentle but pleasant acidity keeping it focused and long on the palate. Really worth checking out! Another stellar wine from Colby at Sittella. Serious wine lovers should take note of this extraordinary and very serious Swan Valley Verdelho from Sittella. Out of 33 wines from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in our staff tasting, I thought this was the most compelling. Be prepared--it is a high acid style and the last thing I would recommend for folks who prefer buttery, soft whites. I reminds me very much of the best, old vine Aligotes from Burgundy with its concentration, high-toned fruit and laser-like focus... All it needs is some oysters!

Something different and super tasty. This great Verdelho from Sittella combines the richness of the varietal with great purity and freshness. This grape can easily get overripe and lose definition but skilled winemaker Colby Quirk has mastered it with this great bottle. Rich stone fruit and round, soft texture but with just enough zesty edges to keep it bright and refreshing. Really interesting wine from an up-and-coming talent in Swan Valley.

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim. While many equate Aussie wines with “value,” there are more than a few extremely rare and pricey options, which never fail to earn the highest ratings from wine publications and critics throughout the world.
