2008 Gusbourne Estate Brut Reserve, Kent, England (Previously $35.00)

SKU #1147733

Winner of the International Wine and Spirits Competition Trophy for Best Sparkling Wine of 2013. Judging Panel Tasting Note: "Pale gold colour with streams of tiny bubbles, the aromas are hazelnut, toast and underlying delicate redcurrant fruit and a hint of rose petal. The palate is mid-weight, concentrated, rich and exotic with layers of flavour, creamy mousse and fresh acidity. Exquisite." Gusbourne Estate is located in Kent, on the escarpment of Appledore and dates back to 1410. The vineyards are situated on all-south-facing slopes, with a warm, dry mesoclimate, and clay, sandy loam soils. The folks at Gusbourne are leading the charge in establishing England as a producer of international sparkling wine. Their estate vineyards are planted exclusively to Champagne grapes--Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier--and their production is dedicated to sparkling wine. They follow the traditional method of sparkling winemaking, with additional aging on the the lees. The Estate Brut Reserve saw 39 months aging on the lees, each vintage is crafted to showcase the 'house' style as well as the style of classic English sparkling wines. Enticing peachy citrus fruit aromas are enveloped on the palate by toasty brioche, toffee, apple and cinnamon spice flavors, with hints of creme brulee on the finish. If you've never tried English sparkling wines, now is the time! Its creamy mousse and depth of flavor give all competition in this price point a serious run for the money.

This can give Champagne a run.... toasty brioche leesy nutty yeasty goodness with great texture and lovely finish. Very surprised by these British sparklers.

Well, this is an unexpected idea to be reviewing an English sparkling wine, I was one of the nay-sayers before I actually tried them...Wow, very surprised by the quality, complexity and balance. So once I was surprised I did a little more investigation and found this had 4 years on the lees, and that's where the very brioche like toastiness comes from. The grapes (thank you Global Warming) are grown at almost the same latitude and soil types as in Champagne...Why wouldn't they be good! Well this actually is truly an English take on sparkling wine, the flavors just slightly different just like they are here in California, but no doubting the quality. You should give our language challenged neighbors to the East a try!

The Gusbourne has a detailed fine bead and a nose that shows a nutty almond and yeasty note along with hints of honey, poached pear, brioche and dried tangerine peel. On the palate there is a lovely texture and richness from spending 3 1/2 years on the lees, that all comes together with excellent balance and length.

A savory wine with intense lees character from the extended ageing on the yeast. Toasty, nutty flavors dominate but the wine also has a bright core of crunchy pear and zesty citrus acidity. A wine showing a lovely element of development and elegance from its time in bottle. This is very hard to pick from great Champagne and has beaten many such Champagnes in blind tastings internationally (Bollinger for one on the BBC’s “12 Drinks of Christmas”) I can definitely see why!
