2003 The Royal Tokaji Wine Company "Szt. Tamás" Aszú 6 Puttonyos (500ml)

SKU #1144862

Despite its relatively recent founding, in 1990, Royal Tokaji has become a leading producer of this ancient, golden nectar of a wine, "a wine that would make angels sing out loud in praise," in the words of wine writer (and RTWC co-founder Hugh Johnson). The Szt. Tamás is a single-vineyard wine. According to the winery: "Szt. Tamás's hallmark is one of voluptuous apricot and plum jam intermingled with tobacco and a touch of chocolate leading to a long and delicate finish. Its 12 hectares face south, south west and south east and are one of the core wine vineyards in the Mád commune of Hungary. Szt. Tamás 1993 enjoyed the dubious distinction of being one of the top 100 wines in the world that 'you should drink before you die'."

- Better known for its paprika than its wine, Hungary is nonetheless one of Eastern Europe's most significant wine-producing countries. Exerjo, Furmint, Hárslevelü and Mezesfeher are just some of the indigenous (and unpronounceable!) varieties most widely planted. And Tokaji is Hungary's biggest success story. Made since the sixteenth century, Tokaji is an extremely sweet wine that was adored by the Russian Tsars. It is made in a manner similar to Sherry, and is reputed to be the longest lived, non-fortified wine in existence (a few hundred years is not unheard of). Hungary's continental climate--predictably cold winters and hot summers--makes it an ideal location for Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon as well.
