2007 Mastroberardino "Radici" Taurasi

SKU #1138023 94 points James Suckling

A wine with wonderfully decadent aromas of meat and ripe berries. Full body, soft tannins and a juicy finish. Reminds me of the great Mastro Taurasis of the 1970s. Drink now. (12/2013)

The 2007 Taurasi Radici boasts stunning richness, depth and power, yet remains relatively accessible and approachable for such a young Taurasi. Juicy dark cherries, cinnamon, plums, spices, incense, tobacco and a myriad of aromas and flavors saturate the palate as this big, textured wine opens up in the glass. Despite its considerable richness and plushness, the 2007 never loses its classical sense of structure. If that combination sounds appealing, believe me, it is. This is a flat-out stunner from Mastroberardino. Best of all, it will drink beautifully pretty much right out of the gate. I imagine the 2007 will be a total home run in restaurants or in other settings where young wines are opened as a matter of necessity. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032. (AG) (2/2013)

*Cellar Selection* This gorgeous wine from southern Italy shows the true potential of native grape Aglianico. It opens with an intense fragrance of black cherry, leather, truffle, underbrush and spice. The dense, velvety palate delivers blackberry, raspberry and white pepper with a hint of espresso. It’s already delicious but hold for even more complexity. Drink through 2027. (7/2014)

This full-bodied red mixes ripe plum and racy wild berry flavors with layers of spicy underbrush, game, ash and dark tobacco notes. Shows fine length, with a smoky aftertaste. Drink now through 2022. (NW) (12/2012)

Mastroberardino has been the flag bearer for this appellation since seemingly forever but officially from 1878. I remember drinking a 1968 Taurasi, a vintage that really propelled them into the forefront of Italian wines, in the mid 1980’s and marveling at its youth, freshness and complexity. This 2007 is amazing, one of the best balanced and most drinkable “young” Taurasi I’ve ever had. Supple and smooth it glides across your palate almost imperceptibly, yet I said almost, you don’t forget it is Aglianico and the power rides under the radar, you need sonar to feel it. The wine is full of dark plumy fruit mixed with Middle Eastern spice and hints of incense. Amazingly drinkable now for Taurasi this is a wine to drink and then age some for another 10-15 years. This incredible Taurasi is aged in French barriques and large Slavonian oak barrels for 12-18 months and it will make you re-think Southern Italian wines.
Drink from 2013 to 2028
