 A blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, it was aged for 18 months in 80% new French and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple, it offers up an alluring bouquet of pain grille, scorched earth, leather, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Layered on the palate, it has tons of spicy, savory fruit, excellent balance, enough stuffing to evolve for another 4-6 years, and a lengthy, pure finish. Drink this nicely rendered effort from 2013 to 2025. The winemaker at the showplace Bodegas y Vinedos Heras Cordon is Alejandra Roxane Schmedes from the renowned Remirez de Ganuza. (JM)  (6/2009)

K&L Notes

Produced from a very classic blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano grown in the villages of Laguardia, Lapuebla El Ciego (Rioja Alavesa) and Fuenmayor and Cenicero (Rioja Alta), this tastes like traditional Rioja. No surprises here, given the carefully tended, lower yielding, mature vineyards (24-37 years old), native yeast fermentation, and 18 month elevage in French and American oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfiltered, after a fining with egg whites (more Rioja tradition for you). Aromas of sweet dark cherries combine with mocha and anise--quite layered and lovely aromatics here. These aromas follow through to the elegant palate. There is no mistaking that what is in your glass is a traditionally inspired Rioja, with a slightly modern update, from a successful vintage. While it's delicious now, I would not hesitate to stash some bottles away to drink over the next 7-8 years. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

There are plenty of exceptional bottles from this heralded vintage, but 2005 Heras Cordon Reserva Rioja is an easy entry, highly-rated and coming in under twenty bucks. Classic in style with a depth of fruit this stands up to food but warrants sipping on its own, thanks to a long finish and round mouthfeel.

When our supplier mentioned that they recently received the winery's remaining stock, I decided to bring this one-time customer favorite back in. It's from a spectacular Rioja vintage in 2005, and at 10 years of age is truly hitting its stride. Showing a combination of sweetly earthy, savory flavor development with the slightly richer fruit of a modern Rioja, this wine should please fans of both styles.

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
