1995 Glen Elgin 17 Year Old A.D. Rattray K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1136712

YUM! Why is Glen Elgin such a delicious Speyside whisky? It seems that everytime we have the opportunity to get a peek at this Diageo-owned Highland distillery the whisky just cries out: DRINK ME! Glen Elgin has one of the longest fermentation times for its wort and one of the slowest distillation times as well. The combination of both results in a heavy, robust spirit that remains light and fruity at the same time. Longer fermentation periods usually result in fruitier worts, while slow distillation times allow the spirit to slowly capture all that flavor. It's a gum-smackingly great phenomenon. Unfortunately we don't get the chance to buy very much Glen Elgin seeing that it's not released in the states as a single malt. It's mostly known as the key ingredient in White Horse. That's why we jumped at the chance to snag this lovely little number from the Morrison's warehouse. This is classic Scotch, in the style of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, but with far more viscosity and a ton of fruit. It reminds me of the few 1970s Glenlivet bottlings I've been fortunate enough to taste. The whisky was aged in hogshead, so there's not much wood influence, just that lovely little kiss of vanilla you expect from ligher Speyside malts. The finish is clean and soft with the malt's heavy mouthfeel taking center stage. Nothing short of lovely, throwback single malt whisky. Less than 200 bottles available. Beautiful expressive aromas are inviting and pretty and they lead to a round and fruity single malt. The Glen Elgin 17 year old is unique and easy to enjoy. There is no smoke just soft delicious flavors. I had it with a splash of water which both softened and opened up this single malt.

Classic speyside- and not one with intense, dark sherry notes. This one was definitely aged in used bourbon barrels, with a slight golden color and well integrated vanilla. Elegant, but very delicious, with almond and floral flavors, this is one of my favorite Rattray bottlings that I've tried.

Another cask selection carefully chosen from the AD Rattray warehouse? Yes, please! This has to be one of the most well balanced, elegant single malt whiskies bottled at cask strength I have tasted in a long time. Classic speyside honey, gentle baking spices, candied stone fruits and vanilla cream are all apparent, even before proofing down with a splash of water, a step that brings all of these wonderful aromatics into sharper focus and adds even more depth to the palate. If you're a fan of Glenrothes, Clynelish, the rare Speyside bottlings which "the David's" have managed to secure in the past...this one will not disappoint! MUST BUY.

Hello Easy Drinking, 17 year old scotch! For $110? YOU ARE CRAZY! But it's the real deal. Score for the Davids, once again. Vanilla, spice, caramel, saline and toast. Do yourself a favor and snap up one for yourself, and one for a pre-holidays gift- even if you're not sure yet who should be the recipient. By the time you start your Christmas shopping, they will be a distant memory. Love it!

Mature malt like this is an endangered species. This fabulous Glen Elgin 17 Year Old from Rattray has not been finished in Lafite barrels or sent into orbit, just left undisturbed for nearly two decades in an old hogshead and the result is pure, whisky flavor. Now that there are so many wealthy malt collectors bidding up the prices of mature bottlings, it is refreshing to see something this good come in at a reasonable price. Get it before its gone- natural Highland flavors like this fully mature offering are not coming along very often.
