2010 Goyo García Viadero "Finca El Peruco" Ribera del Duero

Goyo Garcia Viadero belongs to a storied wine family; together with his sister Yolanda he owns Bodegas Valduero, one of the original wineries to form the Ribera del Duero D.O. back in the early 1980's. While he has made wine at Valduero for a number of years, and continues to help out there, his main focus these days is on his own label, producing Ribera del Duero wines that absolutely sing with intense Tempranillo flavors complicated by unusually high levels of acidity and subtle, enveloping aromatics. How does Goyo do it? Only using fruit from very old, "en vaso" trained vines, harvesting for acidity (as opposed to looking primarily for ripeness), co-fermenting with white grape varieties (as was traditionally done in this and many other regions), using only older barrels ("a new barrel for me is around 5 years old," says Goyo) and eliminating the usage of SO2 during elevage are just some of his secrets. Finca El Peruco is a calcareous clay site featuring 80 year-old vines, 15% of which are the white grape Albillo (which is co-fermented with Tempranillo to produce this wine). Reserved, briskly aromatic, and tensely structured, this dark fruited wine should undoubtedly improve and continue to develop nicely in bottle for many years. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

This is serious, serious, serious wine. This is like a fine Burgundy Grand Cru from Spain. The aromas are floral, lavender with red fruits and spice. The palate brings plenty of acidity, tartness, and medium-bodied weight with fine tannins. This is amazing stuff.

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.

In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
