Whether your friends will recognize the name or not, this is as impressive a bottle of Champagne as you're likely to procure! Another classic vintage wine from Bonville, who is our most "vertical worthy" producer that we carry. Composed entirely from Grand Cru, estate grown Chardonnay, this vintage comes almost exclusively from the village of Avize. This 2008 is similar in style to the 1996, with big ripeness and extraordinary acidity. I have enjoyed many bottles of the 1996 and 1992 recently, as well as drinking the 1986 ,1976, 1973, 1969, 1966, 1964 and 1961. What a seminal year 2008 was. Champagne saw what would be recognized as one of the greatest vintages of many. It has everything. The weight. The rich toast. The clean fruit of apple, nectarine, and even some citrus. The finish is still in my mouth after tasting it last week, so yeah! WOW!

I write this review knowing that, at the rate customers (and staff, myself included!) have been buying it, this wine is not sticking around much longer. But what a wine! Precision, focus and drive combine with delicious fruit and palate persistence. Buy as much as you can afford.

Where to start? This is amazing vintage Champagne, and a completely new experience for me. I have never had a wine that has stuck such a superb balance of ripeness and minerality. The 2008 Bonville needs both of those characteristics to stay in balance because they are present in a very powerful way in this wine. Rarely are such ripe and lush notes present in a Champagne for me: lemon curd, toasted coconut, and sweet hazelnut practically coat your mouth in decadence. These could easily create a plump and drab wine, but the fine chalk and vibrant acidity that frame the palate create one of the most complete bottles of wine on our shelf. Drinkable now, and will age effortlessly for years (or decades) to come. My wine budget might go all to the bubbles this month.

Please, PLEASE don't miss this wine. If you are already a fan of Bonville, you will swoon over this vintage Blanc de Blanc. If you have never tried a Bonville Champagne before - get ready for a real treat. Some of the best vineyards in Avize combined with a spectacular 2008 growing season, make for a stunning combination of freshness, richness and aging potential. I have already witnessed at least one staff member loading CASES onto a hand-truck for his own personal collection!!

The 2008 Franck Bonville "Millesime" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne is one of the first that we have received from this great vintage, and it might be the best bottle of vintage Champagne in the store right now. Last night, Cinnamon and I decided to drink a bottle with one of our favorite Champagne partners, sushi to go. This was not my first bottle of this great Champagne; when Cinnamon and I went to Bonville’s great 20 vintage vertical in Avize last June, it was premiered. I knew that I was in for a treat. But what a treat it was. I can’t say that I have been as impressed by a young bottle of vintage Champagne ever. This Blanc de Blancs is loaded with extroverted aromatics, and from the nose I would guess that it came from a fat, ripe vintage. The white fruit is almost exotic, the bready quality almost warm... It had a lot to give. On the palate this Bonville has the characteristic rich Avize fruit up front, but the back end of the wine is packed with electric vibrancy and fine chalk. To say that it is long finishing is an understatement. I still taste it today. Given the extraordinary form that old bottles of Bonville have today, I would venture to guess that this wine will improve for many decades. The 1964 Bonville looks to be a 100 year wine, the 1961 still has plenty of vigor. At the low price this is offered for, I plan to put down a case for myself. In 20 years I will kick myself for not putting down five. If you love Champagne, don’t miss this one.
