2012 Sigalas "Aa" (Assyrtiko/Athiri) Santorini

SKU #1135471 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This bargain point in the lineup is sometimes (unfairly) easy to overlook because the blend rarely has the depth or pure power of the 100% Assyrtiko. It is not as obvious. It does have its own charms, though: typically, better aromatics and a very elegant presentation. This year, it also has fine concentration to go with its usual finesse, good aromatics and clarity. As always, it will be more approachable early on than the upper level wines tend to be. It is likely to drink well this summer. Crisp and reasonably long, with loads of personality for Santorini, it may be one of my favorite Sigalas blends. ... Plus, one thing it did do, at least at this level and at least for this winery, is give the wine some "oomph," without going too far (it seems more restrained than the 2010 version). Perhaps extra oomph is not always a good thing at the high end, where they already have enough. At this end, though—it may help make this impressive. While it is nowhere near as deep, certainly, as the '12 monovarietal Assyrtiko, it is perhaps more interesting and better balanced. (4/2013)

K&L Notes

This year's combination of Assyrtiko, with its inherent layers of structure and power, combined with the small addition of the bright lift and aromatics of the Athiri is really a knockout. A very bright aromatic of rich citrus and that one of a kind volcanic minerality, which can only be found on Santorini, gives this wine a refreshing character from start to finish. Plenty of juiciness on the palate with expressive length and a happy finish that has verve and identity. This has a certain restrain that can only come from a true master of their craft. Drink nice and chilled on its own or, with chilled fresh fruits and veggies. A killer with fish dishes too! (Eric Story, Greek Buyer)

This is a bright, delicious and refreshing wine that is enjoyable with the first sip. It offers flavors with nice round citrus influenced fruit with hints of mineral added. There is a nice dry finish. It should go great with fish, salads and roast chicken.

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
