2011 Cavalchina Amedeo Bianco di Custoza
A blend of 40% Garganega, 30% Fernanda (Custoza clone), 15% Trebbiano and 15% Trebbianello (Tocai clone) grapes from just south of Lago di Garda, near Verona in the middle of the "thigh" of Italy. This release is named for Prince Amedeo di Savoia, who was injured in a field that is now part of the Cavalchina estate, at the Battle of Custoza during the Third War of Independence in 1866 (during which, basically, the Kingdom of Italy sought to annex Venetia vis-a-vis an alliance with Prussia during a war between the Austrian Empire and Prussia--more complex than an Italian wine label). According to Cavalchina, the secret to finessing this blend is in treating each grape according to its needs: "The strong personality of the Garganega is ideal for fermentation and aging in large Slavonian oak casks of 15-20hl size. In contrast the semi-aromatic Fernanda is most suited to stainless steel fermentation. The grapes are frozen before pressing thus intensifying the aromas, which then evolve during aging with important mineral notes to the wine. The blend is made at the end of May and after the wine is given some months aging in bottles is then released in July."
