2012 Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc-Viognier

SKU #1127960 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A consistent winner in the value sweepstakes, this offering from winemaker Michael Beaulac is a blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Viognier. This dry white offers a stunning aromatic display of honeydew melons, spring flowers, pears and cantaloupe. The sumptuous perfume is followed by a wine with crisp, zesty acids, medium body and abundant purity as well as freshness. The Viognier component no doubt pushes this delightful white toward an exotic, tropical fruit-flavored style. Luckily, there are 87,000 cases produced. This beauty is meant to be consumed over the next year. (8/2013)

K&L Notes

Brand-new release of this unique refresher: a blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Viognier. It's something you'd never see in France, admits the responsible party at Pine Ridge, but then again, a mere 12% alcohol is something you don't see much in California, either. Bottled with a convenient Stelvin cap, priced at a "why not" point, this also happens to be a favorite of Robert Parker, who has scored it 90 points in five vintages, writing in 2011: "This delicious 65,000-case blend of 79% Chenin Blanc and 21% Viognier was aged in stainless steel. (I never knew there was this much Chenin Blanc grown in California!) It exhibits a big, sweet nose of ripe melons, white peaches and apricots as well as crisp acids and a crunchy, succulent mouthfeel." Sir, there are 58,000 acres of Chenin Blanc in California--more than the total vineyard acreage of the Napa Valley, true fact--and they're waiting to be rediscovered.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. - With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
