Before venturing into winemaking, Patrick Krutz worked for a time in a wine and cheese shop, where he developed an educated, informed palate, as reflected in his version of a well-crafted, highly-affordable Sonoma Chardonnay. Blended from ripe Carneros fruit,this medium-weight, straw-colored wine received six months of light barrel treatment, and reveals generous notes of creamy pear, apple and melon, with a whiff of buttered toast on the pronounced, rather round finish. Open tonight and enjoy with a mound of ripe St. Andre!

This is a fresh, primavera-esque Chardonnay, with tangerine, pineapple, and pear flavors subtly framed by discreet oak notes. With its creamy texture and good balance, this is bound to find many fans, and at this price, it will appeal to the pocketbook as well as the palate.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut.
