2011 Palmina Santa Barbara County Malvasia Bianca

SKU #1125619 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Pale yellow. Pungent, pure aromas of melon, lime, ginger and mint, with a hint of dusty minerals. Offers impressive density and power but also terrific cut, showing incisive flavors of underripe pineapple, citrus zest and white pepper. Finishes very long, spicy and vibrant, with persistent floral and herbal nuances. Clifton told me that this fruit was harvested at an extremely low 17.7 degrees Brix. (12/2012)

K&L Notes

There are few wineries stateside who manage to do Italian varietals justice in the way that Steve Clifton of Palmina does.

One whiff of this Malvasia Bianca, and I imagined myself lounging on a tropical beach sipping on this delicious wine! Aromas of tropical fruits and white flowers leap out of the glass, carrying on to the palate with a creamy, yet lively acidic mouth feel. I will be drinking a lot of this wine this summer!

The Malvasia Bianca from Palmina has an almost unmistakable aroma. So very floral, with notes of lavender, rose, and orange blossom, this wine screams spring/summer sipper. It is very dry, with citrus, peach, and rose hips notes rounded out by great acid and a fresh saline note that will leave your mouth watering.

Astonishing is the word that came to mind upon first inhale of the aroma of this beautiful Malvasia Bianca. Intensely aromatic and delivering onto the palate with lychee, apricot, citrus, white flowers and a fresh minerality. This wine has a fantastic zesty acidity will make you keep reaching to for your glass. Stunning & delicious!

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. Specific Appellation:

Santa Maria/Santa Barbara

- Santa Maria and Santa Ynez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
