2009 Samsara "Melville Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah
Chad Melville’s 2009 Samsara Syrah Melville Vineyard was impressive from the beginning and was equally superb here. Intensely aromatic and fragrant, it was one of the most savory, exotic, layered wines in this tasting. Screamingly beautiful and haunting, the Syrah Melville was breathtaking. (AG)

Bright purple. Intensely perfumed scents of black and blue fruits, olive and violet, with sexy Indian spice nuances and a touch of woodsmoke. Broad, sappy, alluringly sweet cassis, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors show superb clarity and power, with cracked pepper and black cardamon notes on the back half. Finishes sappy and long, with resonating spiciness, florality and outstanding persistence. This wine was fermented with 100% whole clusters and was one of the most intriguing bottles that I tasted from the region this year. (JR)
Rich, extracted and dramatic, dazzling in blackberry, currant, anise and smoky aromas and flavors. It’s a big, tannic, flamboyant young wine, just at the start of its journey.
