Produced from 70 year old Semillon (yes, you read correctly, Semillon!) vines in the Finca de Roberto Azaredo vineyard, this is really good, distinctive white wine from a country perhaps better known for Torrontes and Chardonnay. Thank goodness for diversity and old vine fruit, as this delicious white shows lots of originality. A lime and lanolin-filled nose leads to a palate showing a wonderful combination of richness and fresh stone fruit flavors. This wine accompanies a wide range of food, so feel free to experiment, though I would pair with ceviche, goat milk cheeses, or just enjoy on its own as a delicious aperitif. This is tasty, quite original white wine from Mendoza.

Semillon from Mendoza? The Ricardo Santos Finca De Roberto Azaredo was a surprise in many ways. Like the rest of the Bordeaux varieties Semillon is a happy traveler, and these 60 year old vines deliver the goods in the most unlikely place. If found the wine to have a gorgeous honeyed character on the nose and a rich, oily lanolin flavor on the palate. The back end of the wine is completely dry and quite long given the price. This is a must for anyone who loves white Bordeaux, and I think it should age very nicely.

- A rich, viscous, full-flavored but subtly-scented and botrytis-prone white grape, Sémillon reaches magical heights when infected with "noble rot" and combined with even small amounts of the aromatic and high-acid Sauvignon Blanc to make Sauternes, one of the world's most revered and longest-lived wines, and in the sweet wines of surrounding regions like Barsac. Sémillon's most famous incarnation is in the wines of Château d'Yquem, one of the world's most expensive wines, and one that has been known to evolve for centuries. It frequently dominates, but not by much, in the oak-aged whites of Bordeaux's Graves and Pessac-Léognan, creating honeyed and viscous wines that are unlike any others. Elsewhere in Bordeaux and around France it takes on a supporting role in the wines of Entre-Deux-Mers and the Médoc. While planted throughout France, Europe, California and Washington, Sémillon's role as underling usually keeps it out of the spotlight with a few winery-specific exceptions. However, the grape is allowed to shine in Australia's Hunter Valley, where it is used to make an elegant dry wine often called, perplexingly, Hunter Valley Riesling. It also makes some incredible dry, oaked wines from the Barossa and lovely stickies in the style of Sauternes.
