 The 2011 Denton Vineyard Chardonnay presents attractive peach and apricot notes with hints of mandarin peel and white blossom and a little whiff of funk for interest. Light-bodied, crisp and clean, it brings a nice savory edge to the long, peach and citrus-filled finish. Drink it now to 2015+.  (8/2013)

Oakridge winemaker David Bicknell rates the 2011 Chardonnay vintage as amongst the best he has experienced in 20 years making wine in the Yarra. The Local Vineyard designated wines are sourced from a combination of two or more selected vineyard blocks and made with the intention of expressing the unique character of Australia's cool Yarra Valley; in 2011 some of would easily have been considered as potential 864 single block level releases in other years. With a climate between Bordeaux and Burgundy in average temperature, the Yarra Valley is known for wines that display freshness and elegance. From the winemaker: "A traditional winemaking approach was used to produce this wine - hand picking and whole bunch pressing directly to 500 litre French oak puncheons for natural fermentation and a 10 month maturation on lees. The most delicate of the Local Vineyard Series Chardonnays. Complex with depth of flavour even at 12.5%. Deceptive length from soil origins framing pink grapefruit, lemon citrus and white nectarine."

The "Denton" falls a little more in the Chassagne style with a bouquet of lemon blossom, apple, nectarine and peach. On the palate there is a bit more mid-palate weight and richness than the "Barkala" along with some light cinnamon spice leading to a long finish. Like all the Oakridge wines, there is great purity, precision and balance.

The softest and most rounded of the Local Vineyard Series wine from Oakridge. Ripe orchard fruit, yellow peach and fresh apricots. Broader and less linear than the other vineyard expressions. Very charming and immediately expressive. Silky texture, elegant. A true expression of place as the wines are all made identically.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mâcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.


- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim.
