2000 Vaeni Xinomavro Grande Reserve Naoussa

SKU #1123417 89 points Wine Spectator

A minerally, mature-tasting red, with well-balanced dried fruit flavors of cherry, berry and plum. There's a clean finish of smoke and spice, with hints of orange peel. Xinomavro. (Web-2009)

Wine & Spirits

An unusually soft Naoussa, this is plush and gentle with sweet tea and spiced cherry flavors, a loamy richness underneath. (10/2008)

K&L Notes

Vaeni is one of the most successful Co-Ops in Greece. Established in 1983 nearly fifty percent of the Naoussa production is crushed and produced here. I have completely fallen for the Xinomavro varietal. This bottling is very fresh and vibrant, showing tart red fruits, woodsy herbs, black olive and bright acidity. If you like Nebiolo from Piemonte you will undoubtedly like this, too.

Other Red Wines

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
