Foregoing opulence for restraint, the bouquet offers a complex array of blanched almonds, cinnamon, clove and the typical apricot kernel of the variety; the palate is tightly wound, super fresh and long, and the acidity is incredibly fine, almost taking it into top chardonnay territory; superbly constructed.  Light yellow-gold. Classic viognier aromas of white peach, candied lemon, white flowers and spices. Lush but energetic, offering sappy orchard and pit fruit flavors energized by zesty citrus and white pepper notes. Finishes smooth and quite long, with the peach and spice notes repeating.  Yalumba’s flagship Viognier is a broad, powerful wine, with pineapple and apricot flavors marked by hints of floral perfume and spice. Not quite as aromatically expressive as the Eden Valley bottling, it may be a touch denser and more concentrated, with potential to evolve through 2014 or so.  (5/2011)

 The 2009 The Virgilius Viognier has a floral, peach blossom and jasmine scented nose with some ripe apple and fresh apricots notes plus a touch of mace. Full-bodied with medium-high acid, it gives a silky texture, somewhat restrained fruit and a long finish. Delicious now, it should remain fresh through 2013.  (12/2010)

- Relatively challenging to cultivate, this white grape's plantings were long limited to two appellations in the Northern Rhône - Condrieu, the better known of the two, and Château-Grillet - but its recent gains in popularity inspired plantings in the Languedoc-Roussillon, across California, as well as in parts of Australia, Italy, Spain and South America. Intensely aromatic and full-bodied, Viognier is prized for its aromas and flavors of stone fruits, d'Anjou pears and white flowers. In fact, its heady perfume wins it the honor of being a rare white varietal used in one of the world's top reds - Côte-Rôtie - where it is often planted amid the Syrah and co-fermented with that grape. The combination deepens the color of Côte-Rôtie and adds to its already deep and distinctive nose.


- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim.
