2010 Tikves "Special Selection" Vranec Republic of Macedonia

SKU #1110785 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Made by consulting oenologist Philippe Cambie, who has been telling me for years, 'Wait until you taste my wines from Macedonia,' this 100% Vranec (an indigenous varietal) reveals a high quality California Zinfandel-like, briery, raspberry, earthy, peppery fruit character as well as a southern Rhone garrigue and spice box note. The wine possesses gorgeous fruit, medium to full body, supple tannins and outstanding purity as well as length. This remarkable value exhibits a deep ruby/plum color, abundant black currant fruit, and an unmistakable personality. It comes from 30 to 60-year-old Vranec vines from the oldest winery in Macedonia, first established in 1885. How long will it last? I have no idea, but there is certainly enough fruit and body for it to hold up for at least 2-4 years. But, why wait? RP (6/2012)

K&L Notes

Intense ruby red color with rich aromas of wild berries. The taste reveals dry plums and matured morello cherries in good harmony with sweet tannins. Overall, this wine is complex and intense. It pairs well with spicy and strong dishes and grilled meat, including beef, lamb, duck and wild game. Hand-crafted with passion and patience, Tikves' wines are emblematic of Macedonia’s ancient tradition of winemaking. The winery uses sustainable practices throughout its operations including limiting the use of treatment of the vines, reducing consumption of both energy and water, building solar panes for self-sustainable energy and a commitment to recycling waste and turning it into natural fertilizer. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 1500 feet so temperatures remain cool, due to a constant breeze.

This is a truly fun wine to drink. For me it is like two worlds colliding. You have the indigenous varietal Vranec being put to use with modern day wine making techniques all the while retaining traditional and sustainable practices. Rich in color with spiced berry aromatics, nice weight on the palate and just enough earthiness on the finish to complement the round tannin structure.
