2011 Aphros Vinhão Rosé Vinho Verde

SKU #1109049

Aphros wines are all produced from certified biodynamic grapes, in an area where farming this way, due to the humid climate, is not easy. Proprietor Vasco Croft is commited to biodynamics, and all of the Aphros wines are beautiful expressions of the terroir in the Lima sub-zone of Vinho Verde. Vinhao is one of the rare red grape varieties with both a darkly colored skin and pulp inside. Even with a delicate foot trodding in traditional granite lagares, without any additional maceration on the skins, the wine is a beautiful hue, approximating the dusky, pale garnet color of a lighter red wine such as Grignolino. This is a lovely rosé, serious and sufficiently structured to merit serious attention, but bright and tasty enough to quaff. I suspect that this will be one of those rosés which holds up nicely with bottle age as well. A wonderful, intriguing wine. (Joe Manekin, K&L Portuguese wine buyer)

I really can't get enough of this lovely, quintessential Portuguese rosé, perhaps the purest expression of this indigenous teinturier, or red-fleshed, variety that I've tasted. More red than rosé in its scaffold of penetrating dark raspberry and cherry flavors, braced by the signature piercing acidity of this very traditional style of wine so loved by the Portuguese people. An acquired taste for some, I would suggest you open a bottle, relax on your deck on a warm autumn day, and treat yourself to an utterly thirst-quenching experience.

Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds. Click for a list of bestselling items from Portugal.
