 An excellent Zin--this has an invitingly soft floral nose, mountainous black-fruit flavors and structure and plenty of depth. This should age nicely over the next 3 - 5 years, but it is delicious to drink now, too.  (7/2012)

Bill Easton has quietly been making some of the best wines than most people have never heard of. Between his Terre Rouge label that focuses on Rhône varietals, and the Easton label that focuses on everything else, I believe that he makes some of the best wines coming out of the Sierra Foothills. His wines are always varietally correct and completely accessible and wildly affordable, a great combination if there ever was one. Most of his vineyards are at high elevation and are planted on volcanic soil. This, the 14th vintage of this particular wine is a treat, with boisterous red fruited snap and plenty of spicy cinnamon and clove tones straight out of the gate. The freshness and agility of this wine was completely surprising and I thought of this wine like a technically sound flyweight that is quick on his feet and has lightning fast hands rather than an oaf-y heavyweight that can only throw 20 punches a round and has to clinch all the time. I knew instantly that this was going to be my new BBQ red of the Summer!

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.

Sierra Foothills/El Dorado

- This sweeping inland territory (an AVA on its own right), encompassing El Dorado, Fiddletown, Shenandoah and Amador, has been on the grape-growing map since the Gold Rush. With the exception of high-altitude El Dorado, the vineyards here are sun-baked and hot—in other words, best suited to old-vine zinfandel, petit sirah and Rhône varietals. The cooler climes of El Dorado are ideal for cabernet, chardonnay and merlot.
