2011 Ponzi Willamette Valley Pinot Gris

 The Ponzi 2011 Pinot Gris reflects not only the increasing age of the estates oldest vines of this variety, but also the diversity of expositions, soils, and locations, now that two sites beside the original vineyard are planted with it. Estate fruit is supplemented with contract grapes sourced from as far away as Zenith in the Eola Hills. Tank vinification; near-absence of malo-lactic conversion; a soupcon of Muscat Ottonel and Gewurztraminer; and (abstracting from recent experiments with spontaneous fermentation) reliance on a single selected yeast strain remain constants. Fresh apple, quince, lime and grapefruit lusciously refresh the palate, while honeysuckle and orange blossom waft throughout. There is some textural tenderness here as well as buffering of the green apple acidity that one too seldom encounters in Willamette Pinot Gris and a satisfyingly juicy and persistent finish. Enjoy this over the next 18-24 months.  (8/2012)

The 2011 Ponzi Pinot Gris is really tangy and fresh, with bright citrus notes, zesty acidity, and a fine current of minerals. It's delicious and refreshing cool-climate Pinot Gris that over-delivers in quality for the price.

Pinot Gris

- Also known as Pinot Gris in France, where it originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir. The berries can vary in color from yellowish to bluish-violet producing wines that range from white to slightly pink. The most successful wines from the grape come from the Collio in Friuli (Northeast Italy), where the wines are light- to medium-bodied, crisp, dry and, because of their high acidity, complementary to the region's foods like speck, Prosciutto di San Daniele and polenta. In Alsace, where the grape takes a back seat to more popular varietals like Gewürztraminer and Riesling, it is generally rich and honeyed. Other successful plantings of Pinot Grigio exist in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Romania, with even smaller amounts planted in British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand and California.

- Highly touted for its Pinot Noirs, Oregon is part of the up-and-coming winemaking industry in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
